Tiima is over eight thousand square meters large and includes the Science Centre Tietomaa, the Northern Ostrobothnia Museum, eight exhibition halls, an interactive immersive space, workshop facilities, a restaurant, and a shop. Additionally, there are facilities for outdoor activities. “Tiima is a large complex where everyone can choose what interests them the most to explore”, the Oulu Museum and Science Centre’s Director Pekko Olsbo explains.
Tiima’s six opening exhibitions examine the Northness. The theme is approached from the perspectives of, for example, relation to nature and its animals, history and modernity, as well as (light) phenomena. Northness is connected to the Oulu2026 Brave Hinterland theme.
Even though Tietomaan and the Northern Ostrobothnia Museum have private facilities in Tiima, many of the opening exhibitions are brand-new joint productions. “The Musem and Science Centre’s multi-professional personnel gets to truly stretch the boundaries and often jump over them completely”, Olsbo describes.
Lessons from previous experiences have also been learned. The Northern Ostrobothnia Museum’s popular children’s exhibition Kakaravaara has inspired Tiima’s coming children’s museum. Children and operators working with children participated already in the planning stages.
The modernity, modularity, height and safety of the new facilities permit brand-new exhibition production. Some spaces are condition-monitored as well. “While designing and building the opening exhibitions, we learned a lot about the facilities and their opportunities. This is why we will implement some of the opening exhibitions almost entirely by ourselves”, Olsbo states. Significant international exhibitions can also be brought to the new facilities. “Something amazing already on the way in the coming years”, Olsbo reveals.
Experience Space VISIO takes you to new dimensions
VISIO opening in Tiima will be one of the world’s most impressive immersive experience spaces. The space takes visitors onto a unique voyage through the universe utilizing state-of-the-art technology as the first such space in Finland. The activities are based on the Austrian Science Centre Arts Electronica’s Deep Space concept.
Interactive virtual reality, where participants can affect the turn of events, creates unique moments: alone, together, with friends or with a school group.
Captivating live performances, interactive stories and games, comprehensive examination of cultural treasures, media art, expedition into the human body – unbelievable experiences will amaze the visitors over and over again.
A laser tracking system and massive wall and floor projections with hyper accurate 8K-3D resolution create a brand-new facility – and reality.
The name VISIO is derived from the Latin word meaning sight. A ‘vision’ can also mean an impression or idea about what something could or should be.
